South Rumpus

The Fun Begins at 8:40 along Colvin St.

Okay, so you can't get excited about actually running or walking in a big deal event that practically goes right past your front door.

We understand.

But what about free subs at your very own " Station," free beverages, free t-shirts, free giveaways, free music, and an amazing two and a half hours of passersby you can get excited about?

FREE.  NO COST TO YOU.  NOT A PENNY.  NOT EVEN THE SWIPE OF A CARD.

We'd like you to be a key guest at a different sort of party in honor of people from age 2 to 93 from all over the U.S. and Canada.  That's who'll be out there on E. Colvin Street, heading out and back on a course that's so scorching-fast that people buy plane tickets and hotel rooms and come from all over the U.S. to see how fast they can run a 5K (3.1 miles).

Following one recent edition of the SFoR, one talented runner from out of town had this to say about the event:

"Congratulations on an epic event.  The wild intensity and shoulder to shoulder racing of the top male masters runners in the United States was one for the ages.  The first kilometer was like surfing a twenty-foot wave of energy and adrenaline.  This was a celebration of racing on the highest level.  SFoR does it right!"

And that was without you and that was before South Rumpus.

We think you can ramp up the "energy and adrenaline"--and help them run even faster--by coming down to E. Colvin St. between Skytop Rd. and Buckingham Ave. and making some helpful noise.  In addition to former Olympians, national record holders, and national champions, you'll see a bunch of fellow S.U. students, faculty, and staff (even your RD), members of the S.U. running club and triathlon club; a bigger bunch of local folks; and even a big bunch of little kids (running farther that morning than you've run all semester).

You'll see people older than your parents running faster than anyone on your high school cross country team could run.  You'll see a bunch of 80-year-old men and women running 5K.  If you're paying attention, you'll even see a 93-year-old man go by.  His name is Henry; he's from Cheektowaga, in Western New York; and he's looking forward to hearing a lot of you calling him by name when you shout encouragement.

You bring yourself and a friend and some positive noise.  Costumes, noise makers, pom-poms, CD/IPod players, balloons, dance lines, musical instruments, and signs are optional.  If you've got 'em, bring 'em.

The starting gun fires at 8:50 a.m., and then again at 9:50 a.m., and then again at 10:45 a.m.

The question is:

Are you ready to rumpus?
